Tackle 'easily bored' graduates with training and development

10 September 2008

Training provides a key aid for managers who struggle to retain impatient and "easily bored" graduate workers, it has been claimed.

Pareto Law's Paul Drew pointed out that younger professionals have "totally different" desires and motivations to their older counterparts.

"Understanding these motivations is essential to successfully keeping staff," the recruitment firm's marketing manager remarked to The People Bulletin.

"We find that training is essential to ensuring staff development and progression is seen throughout a business," he added, noting that a "training-needs analysis" enables leaders to understand the staff requirements throughout their organisation.

Mr Drew's observations were offered in response to a survey by engagement and retention specialist TalentDrain, which highlighted that graduates are prone to leave their jobs because of a lack of development or performance management.

Graduates in managerial roles value personal growth, career progression and independence most, the human resources specialist found.

TalentDrain, which has advised organisations including the Financial Services Authority and Virgin Mobile, emphasises that staff attrition rates can be improved with well-trained leaders who "understand how to manage" and develop their staff.ADNFCR-1303-ID-18773514-ADNFCR
