Tourism sector 'must give more women management and appraisals training'
15 May 2009
The UK tourism sector must provide more skills development such as appraisals training to women, an expert asserts.
Brian Wisdom, chief executive of People 1st, says management and leadership are among the areas where there are skill shortages in the industry.
He comments that too few women reach the top levels of companies and this is harming tourism firms.
"There are all sorts of factors involved, but whilst we don't get women into these senior positions, we are wasting a huge amount of management talent," he states.
Mr Wisdom states that there is a fantastic talent base available to the tourism sector but that this is being wasted due to a lack of courses such as appraisals training.
Earlier this year, chairman of Visit Britain Christopher Rodrigues told the Independent that the UK tourism sector must improve customer service, potentially through training in this area.
He says that there is now a higher level of pressure to perform well in this respect, as visitors are less forgiving.
