Training: Poor attendance 'can cause problems'

06 April 2009

Employees who fail to attend internal training sessions can cause a number of problems for companies, which could require tuition for trainers to address.

Writing under the pseudonym Josie Roberts, a training manager in the private sector advises against charging departments penalties for cancellations as this is "not conducive to getting results", TrainingZone.co.uk reports.

Ms Roberts states: "Allowing people to treat internal courses more casually than external ones can lead them to value the material less when they do attend."

Recognising the problems that non-attendance can cause, she advises trainers work to shorten their material and design them to be usable with fewer participants in case the turnout is low.

Using an example of an instance where she cut a full-day course to run in half the time, she tells the news provider that working at a brisk pace made the courses more accessible.

In other news, Nigel Paine, former head of training and development at the BBC and managing director of a self-named company, recently told the source that a high level of employee engagement increases the effectiveness of learning.ADNFCR-1303-ID-19110796-ADNFCR
