Training and development opportunities 'enhance job satisfaction'

29 September 2008

There is less chance of an employer having a dissatisfied or unmotivated workforce if opportunities for training and promotion are a regular fixture, it has been claimed.

According to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), employees' complaints about increased workload and a lack of control are symptomatic of a lack of such opportunities.

Nigel Stanley, head of campaigns at the TUC, remarks that people "will always have gripes" about their jobs.

However, he continues, research shows that people "will generally be satisfied with jobs that use their talents properly, give them autonomy over how they do it and a chance to develop new skills as well as paying them fairly."

With unemployment on the rise, he concludes, choice is limited for many jobseekers, making effective talent management imperative for all leaders in the current economic climate.

His comments follow this month's release of an extensive poll by YouGov, entitled 'What workers want', which indicated that almost a third of UK employees are frustrated by poor promotion prospects and a lack of training.ADNFCR-1303-ID-18801860-ADNFCR
