It is crucial that employees are properly trained and managed, it has been suggested by a government minister.
Speaking at a Health and Safety Executive conference this week, work and pensions secretary James Purnell said that people management is essential to avoid dangerous incidents, Personnel Today reports.
According to the news provider, Mr Purnell told delegates that a well trained, fully committed workforce is crucial.
"Having a well trained, fully committed workforce is vital. They will know how to spot the warning signs, and how to prevent them becoming major incidents," he said.
The Health and Safety Executive reports that in 2006-07, 241 workers were killed in the workplace, while the Labour Force Survey revealed that 274,000 reportable injuries occurred during this period.
During this time, approximately six million days were lost through workplace injuries, while a further 30 million were lost as a result of work-related illnesses.
