Training is a "two-way street"

15 May 2008

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) has given a mixed reaction to the government's draft legislative programme concerning education and skills.

Under new proposals, employees will have the right to request time off from work in order to attend training courses as well as introducing workers' entitlement to apprenticeships.

John McGurk, the CIPD's skills adviser, said that the government's plan concerning apprenticeships could undermine employers, while he offered cautious optimism over the training suggestions.

"It is important that we do not lose sight of the fact that training is a two-way street. It is of benefit to the learner, but must also contribute to meeting the business needs of the employer," he said.

Should the above criteria fail to be met, then employers should have the right to deny it, he added.

The CIPD is the professional body which represents the interests of those involved in the management and development of people in the UK.
