UK 'leading Europe on training provision'

20 June 2008

Medium and large-sized firms in the UK are some of the best in Europe when it comes to training provision, according to a new survey.

The report, compiled by French analysts, compared 1,000 organisations across the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

It indicated that 61 per cent of workers in this country received training in 2007, compared to under half of those in the other European countries.

Training in the UK was also found to feature more of a focus on the measuring of effectiveness and return on investment for firms.

Jeremy Blain, joint managing director of Cegos, the firm which carried out the research, told information portal Elearnity UK bosses "are leading the pack in accessibility, content delivery and accountability".

"Technology is playing a crucial role in driving down the cost of training, speeding up learning and making training more accessible to a wider audience," he added.

Mr Blain concluded: "This trend will continue to be driven by today's time-pressured workplace and current economic conditions as companies strive to get more for less."

Marcus du Sautoy, a professor of maths at Wadham College Oxford, previously underlined the importance of honing basic employer skills such as writing and numeracy in an increasingly technology-led world.ADNFCR-1303-ID-18649675-ADNFCR
