YouGov poll presents 'training challenge' for bosses
03 September 2008
A lack of training opportunities is one of workers' biggest gripes, according to a YouGov poll of the nation's employees.
Carried out on behalf of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the survey of almost 3,000 people also identified poor promotion prospects and "boring or repetitive work" as complaints.
Unfair pay structures and discrimination were further common concerns voiced in the poll, suggesting management training is needed for many senior leaders.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said the results present a challenge for British employers, with nearly one in three employees claiming their manager does not adequately engage with them.
He continued: "There may be no magic bullet for improving Britain's productivity, but without engaging staff and providing the training and advancement opportunities they want, we do not have much chance."
While many employees are "reasonably content", he concluded, a considerable proportion experience serious problems like bullying and unfair discrimination.
The most common type of discrimination cited to YouGov was age, followed by gender, sexuality and race.
