Investors in People denies training apartheid

28 January 2008

Investors in People (IIP) has denied that there is a kind of 'training apartheid' at organisations with IIP awards, Personnel Today reports.

A recent study by the Nottingham University Business School found that many employees from minority groups at these companies are missing out on training, which may include telephone and writing skills training.

This is because those companies with IIP accreditation often gear training provision to business needs, meaning that training is focused more on "a cadre of value-creating professionals and managers".

Many ethnic minorities, women, disabled employees and older workers are missing out as a result, the study indicated.

However, an IIP spokesman said that all organisations accredited by Investors in People are "rigorously assessed".

"This includes analysis of whether it delivers the access to training and development support to all staff," he said. "If employers don't meet the evidence requirements, they are not accredited."
