Staff training vital for companies addressing long-term issues

02 November 2007

Employers needing to address longer-term issues that require specific skills ought to invest in staff development.

That's the view of Jo Causon of the Chartered Management Institute, who said that freelance workers may not be an ideal option for taking care of long-term work.

She conceded that freelancer and short-contract workers were a good way for SMEs to cope with short-term problems and improve flexibility, but added that staff training was a better option for the long-term.

"Employers who want to grow their business should look to professional development programmes which build the skills of existing staff for the future," she said.

"Parachuting in freelance or short-contract workers to address longer-term skills issues is not a solution to gaining the competencies that small businesses need to be successful."

Types of training that can be invaluable for companies include contract law training, telephone and writing skills training and performance management training.
