Develop Communication Skills To Boost Business Objectives

Paying closer attention to communication skills development would not only reduce staff turnover, it would also impact positively on a firm's business objectives, suggests a new study.

Non-profit industry organisation the British Association of Communicators in Business (CiB) polled communications professionals around the UK and found that more than a third expect to change job over the next year.

A desire for further development was the most popular reason cited by respondents, followed by a "lack of priority and resources" given to communications in their organisation.

Problems created by structural and reporting issues were further sources of dissatisfaction put forward.

CiB national chairman Paul Brasington pointed out that individuals increasingly focus on what brings them job satisfaction, even when they are faced with a challenging commercial climate.

"Employers would do well to listen more closely to the concerns of their professional communicators," he continued.

In addition to bringing down staff turnover, he confirmed, this could also augment the effectiveness of internal communications in making "a real contribution to business objectives".

According to the CiB's survey, the most important aspect of communication within an enterprise is "understanding the business", followed by strategic thinking, writing skills and adept face-to-face communication.
