Tesco: Managers trained not to discriminate

Retail giant Tesco has credited its thorough discrimination training with seeing it through an employment tribunal lost by a former employee this week.

Muslim forklift driver Mohammed Ahmed sued the store on religious grounds after he was asked to handle alcoholic drinks in the course of his duties.

However, representatives for the chain pointed out their staff are informed about what their jobs entail from the outset, before dismissing allegations Mr Ahmed's line manager had been "aggressive".

"Cases like this are very rare as our managers are trained to be culturally sensitive and have an 'open-door policy' to all staff for any issues as everyone is welcome to work at Tesco," a spokesperson remarked.

"We are pleased with the outcome."

Derby resident Mr Ahmed further accused his former employer of victimisation and harassment during last month's three-day tribunal, charges which were also dismissed.

News of the outcome follows the "extraordinary" discrimination training reminder provided by retail banking group Abbey last month.

The group is contesting the record race discrimination payout - £2.8 million - awarded to former accountant Balbinder Chagger, who was made redundant two years ago.ADNFCR-1303-ID-18865566-ADNFCR
